GASTRO-ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE




   This is also called GERD in it's shortened form. It is a digestive disorder affecting the lower esophageal sphincter. It refers to the movement of gastric acid and food into the esophagus. GERD is a common condition, affecting 5-7% of the population. Symptoms include: chronic heartburndysphagia, and an unpleasant sour taste in the mouth.

Causes of GERD:
There are three main causes of reflux disease:
(i) Dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter
(ii) Delayed gastric emptying
(iii) Hiatal hernia


Treatment:
Treatment involves lifestyle changes which includes dietary changes, medication, and as a last resort, surgery.
