Matthew chapter 4v1-11
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him
The passage talks about the temptations of Jesus Christ. The details are as follows:
Venue: Wilderness
Tempter: Satan
The temptation can be grouped into 3 classes: Class 1, Class 2, Class 3
Class 1 Temptation
"And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread." (v3), the devil tempted Jesus Christ with the desires of the flesh. Jesus Christ was hungry, this was because He fasted a month and days.
The devil was aware of the following facts:
(1) Jesus Christ was hungry
(2) Jesus Christ was and is the Son of God
(3) Jesus Christ had the power and ability to command the stones to become bread if He wanted to do so.
Although the devil was aware of the facts listed above, he proceeded in making the statement he made in (v3). With the devils' statement being laid down, Jesus Christ filled with the Holy Spirit *(Matthew 3v16; Acts 10v38), responded not with his own thoughts, but from the word of God. Jesus' response is recorded in Matthew chapter 4v4, and this verse of the Holy scripture is also found in *Deuteronomy 8v3.
You might be thinking: How was Jesus able to quote the Old Testament that existed long before He was born on earth?
The answers includes: (1) He studied the Scriptures. He obeyed that which is written in Joshua 1v8
(2) He is and was The Word of God (3) He was empowered by the Holy Spirit (v1)
Lessons learnt from Class 1 temptation includes:
(1) You must not do everything people DARE you to do. Think before acting.
(2)Put to practice that which is written in *Joshua 1v8.
(3)Do not rely on your strength to overcome any temptation, but use The Word
(3) Do not read The Word, Study The Word!
(3) Let the Holy Spirit lead and direct you every-time.
